Why Can't Foam Extinguishers Be Used For Electrical Fires?

The reasons why foam extinguishers cannot be used in electrical fires mainly include the following aspects:
1. Conductivity risk: The extinguishing agent sprayed by the foam extinguisher contains water, which is conductive. In an electrical fire, if the power supply is not completely cut off, the electrical equipment may still be live. The use of foam extinguishers will increase the risk of electric shock, and the current may be transmitted through foam and water, causing electric shock injury to rescue personnel.

2. Insulation damage: Electrical equipment is designed with certain insulation performance to prevent current leakage. The water and other chemicals in the foam extinguishing agent may penetrate into the electrical equipment, damage its insulation layer, cause short circuit or permanent damage, and even cause a new fire after extinguishing.

3. Fire intensification: electrical fires are often accompanied by high temperatures. When water-based foam contacts high temperature electrical components, it may quickly evaporate and form steam, which may not only spread the fire, but also increase the risk of explosion, especially in confined spaces.

4. Unsuitable extinguishing mechanism: foam fire extinguishers are mainly used to extinguish fires by covering the flame surface and isolating oxygen, and are suitable for Class A (solid matter) and some Class B (liquid) fires. Electrical fires require extinguishing agents that can quickly interrupt arcs, cool equipment, and prevent conductivity, such as dry powder (non-conductive) in dry powder fire extinguishers, CO2 in carbon dioxide fire extinguishers, or clean gas fire extinguishing systems. These extinguishing agents can more safely and effectively extinguish electrical fires.

In summary, when extinguishing electrical fires, non-conductive extinguishing equipment such as dry powder fire extinguishers and carbon dioxide fire extinguishers should be preferred. If conditions permit, the power should be cut off first before carrying out firefighting operations to ensure safety and effectiveness.
